    by Ruth Worthing Shaw

Compiling this collection of place-names and their sources has been a joyful hobby which has shed unexpected lights on the history and culture of Fond du Lac County. The decision to publish this list has, however, brought in its wake a long succession of choices between what to include and what to omit.

  • A Photographer's History Of Fond du Lac County Vol II

    by by Ray Thornton

The more recent photos in this volume may inspire some memories, such as my 1956 and 1976 photo tours of Main Street. The early photos reveal some local history including the street numbering system which changed shortly after 1900. This book begins, as did my first book, with a trip from South Main Street, to the lakefront. Many churches, educational buildings and historical events are recorded. At this time of this printing, considerable changes are occurring on the local scene. It is my desire that through photography we preserve some of this history.

To the sturdy men and women who laid the foundation for our city, we dedicate this book. Today men and women at their employment and at their leisure move about in such a great rush that they have little time for studying lengthy accounts of the history and make-up of their own city, no matter how interesting, how important or how dramatic it might be.
